Chardonnay Deli: A Delicious Café-Deli in the Constantia Valley
This once-hidden gem is a favourite among locals and out-of-towners.
By Inside Guide • 17 March 2025
If you drive along Constantia Main Road where the old oak trees flank the avenue, you’ll come across Chardonnay Deli. Housed in a renovated historic building, the reclaimed wooden counters and straw-plaited baskets filled with fresh produce set the rustic farm stall scene.
Owner Charmaine Lilje opened this farmstall/ restaurant/ bakery/deli in Constantia in December 2014 as a next step for her upmarket catering company. Feathers in Lilje’s cap include apprenticeships under the likes of Olympia Café’s Kenneth McClarty and award-winning chefs Franck Dangereux and Luke Dale-Roberts.
On prominent display is a beautiful selection of homemade cakes, churned out by her team of excellent bakers, who create irresistibly moreish mouthfuls. You must try their signature sourdough and baked cheesecakes!
Breakfast and lunch dishes of the day are written on a chalkboard-painted wall, and include granola, croissants, pies, quiches, and charcuterie produced by cured-meat maestro Richard Bosman. The deli section offers a wonderful array of award-winning local cheeses, jams, gluten-free treats to take home, fruit and vegetables, homemade ice cream, artisanal coffees, olive oils and homemade meals. And there is also a wide range of unique gifting items to choose from.
Good to know Chardonnay Deli has branches in Kalk Bay and on Constantia Uitsig wine farm.
