Globe-trotting tapas dishes with flair.
A new kid on the Constantia Uitsig block, refreshing new eatery Ember & Oak has quickly filled a gap for locals longing for an informal but tasty array of global tapas. Tim and Judy Pick (Tim is ex-Foxcroft and La Colombe) have created a short menu of delicious small plates to browse on the terrace tables outside the Uitsig heritage cottages, along with a glass or two of Uitsig wines or a refreshing slushy.
The vineyard, lawns and Constantiaberg mountain views are spectacular, but it’s the flavourful, unpretentious (and affordable) small plates that are already drawing a crowd of repeat customers. On our visit we tucked into the yellowtail ceviche puri (served on an egg box), the Yakitori chicken wings with a gochujang glaze, and the tuna tataki with nori crisp. Oh, the tongue-in-cheek Chardonnay and Savannah slushies are perfect for summer.

Don’t miss some brilliant fusion food at recently opened Ember and Oak. The menu heroes thoughtful tasty small plates … a big hit with our crew. We were afforded a proper converation (rather than “food OK I hope”) with very engaging chef TIm Pick. The Picks are unafraid to mess with convention … wine slushies and Steri Stumpie cocktails provide evidence of same. And fastidious curation of locally produced honey for a barbecue sauce shows how much trouble they go to for their diners. If you like small plates and are keen for a food adventure go eat at E&O.
