Klein Goederust: A Boutique Franschhoek Wine Farm with a Weekend Spitbraai Feast

The son of a farm labourer, who grew up on a local wine farm before studying business, Paul Siguqa realised a long-held dream when he bought Klein Goederust in 2019. He’s created a boutique Franschhoek Valley wine farm that’s all about ubuntu, sharing fine wines and South African farm feasts. He’s restored the historic farm buildings, re-planted the vines and created a serene, beautifully decorated wine-tasting room, with a wide verandah overlooking manicured gardens, koi pond and Franschhoek mountain views that consciously include the township.

A weekend lamb spitbraai

On weekends, the already-famous lamb spitbraai is the attraction. Roasting slowly outdoors all morning, the whole lamb serves as an anchor to the appetising farm-style buffet of elevated South African classics, laid out in the simple but elegant homestead restaurant, with tables and comfortable hand-stitched leather chairs around the stoep. Think chicken potjie and roosterkoek (bread rolls made on an open flame), sweet-potato rolls, curried fish and salads, followed by gorgeous desserts of chocolate roulade and poached pears in red wine.

Wine-tasting and cheese platters

Klein Goederust’s sell-out success cap classique is named after Paul’s mother, Nomaroma, who although retired from the wine cellar where she worked in the MCC room for 37 years, still applies her expert palate to advise on her son’s wine. The rest of the beautifully crafted range, comes from the skilled hand of Paul’s childhood friend, winemaker Rodney Zimba, and includes a beautifully fresh chenin blanc, a gently oaked chardonnay, pepper- and fynbos-evoking shiraz, a cabernet merlot blend, and a noble late harvest, which make for a rewarding wine-tasting experience, perhaps with a cheese platter to share.

Klein Goederust is about community, ubuntu and unpretentious farm feasts, with a generous dose of meticulous craftsmanship, and side-helpings of quintessential Franschhoek mountain views.
