Kleine Zalze Restaurant: Relaxed + Perfectly Matched Wining + Dining

An ever-evolving menu in a superb setting.

Kleine Zalze’s oak-shaded, bedouin-tented terrace is where many an idle afternoon has been spent enjoying world-class wines, gorgeous valley views and fine food. Recently, the estate has introduced a more casual and holistic approach to wining and dining delightfully intertwining the two for utmost satisfaction.

Kleine Zalze Restaurant Autumn Views

Chef Nic van Wyk, who took the reins of Kleine Zalze Restaurant after the closure of Terroir in 2020, favours simpler, bistro-style fare inspired by classic cuisine and traditional South African fare. His menu is made up of delectable plats du jour as well as a selection of made-for-sharing tapas plates for those more focused on wine tasting.

Seasonal flavours

Kleine Zalze Restaurant Autumn Menu

As summer blends into autumn, the kitchen has been busy creating a menu of delicious seasonal flavours. It’s the perfect time to experience chef Nic’s generous, honest approach to cooking.

The plats du jour include venison in grappa and Gorgonzola cream with gnocchi; fish of the day with fennel cream and marinated roast red peppers; sirloin steak with smoked onion and garlic jus (not forgetting the sides of potato, creamed spinach and battered onion rings); and a wood-fire roasted harissa cauliflower.

Kleine Zalze Restaurant Autumn Dishes

The tapas selection runs the gamut from prawns (with a spicy Vietnamese dip) and baby squid with smoked aïoli to pork belly or baba ghanoush with goat’s cheese and za’atar. And what could be more heart-warming than sharing a plate of venison loin with curried slaphakskeentjies (mustardy onion salad), or lamb staanrib (cooked over the coals) with apricot and sherry vinegar dressing?

Kleine Zalze Restaurant Autumn Dessert

For dessert, there’s classic peaches and cream; caramelised pear matched with Gorgonzola; coffee cake with dark chocolate ice-cream; and mosbolletjie crêpes – made with grape must (freshly crushed grape juice) and aniseed.

Wait, there’s more…

The restaurant recently introduced Gourmet Burger Fridays (evenings only) and lunchtime chalkboard specials – an opportunity for the kitchen staff to get creative and rustle up something different from the best ingredients available on the day. On Sundays, there’s a special two- or three-course lunch menu, ideal for a family gathering.

Kleine Zalze Restaurant: Tasting Center

The Wine Tasting Centre is mere steps from the restaurant, where you can sip on Family Reserve and Cellar Selection wines, along with Kleine Zalze’s award-winning Brut Cap Classiques, sure to bring a sense of sparkle to any Winelands outing.

Autumn in the Winelands still has sunny, warm, bright days to match the vibrant red, maroon, green and golden-hued vines – where better to savour the change of season than on Kleine Zalze’s terrace…
