Kleine Zalze Restaurant: A Relaxed Mediterranean-Themed Summer Menu

Kleine Zalze’s oak-shaded, bedouin-tented terrace is where many an idle afternoon has been spent enjoying world-class wines, gorgeous valley views and fine food. Chef Nic van Wyk’s summer menu is designed for relaxed lunches that showcase his simple, bistro-style dishes.

Taste, explore, relax

Flexibility is the focus. Choose any dish from the à la carte menu and decide how to experience it. Taste is for tapas portions to graze on, perfect when you have decision fatigue and feel like tasting your way through the whole menu. Explore gives you starter-size portions. Relax is a full main-course plateful to linger over. The scenic setting and superb Kleine Zalze wines give you every reason to let lunch segue into late afternoon, as tasting turns into a satisfying feast.

Fresh Mediterranean flavours predominate on the seasonally changing menu. For summer, irresistible vegetarian and plant-based dishes, such as gazpacho with pickled peppers and cucumber; pickled leeks, artichokes with four-bean salad; and wild mushroom arancini with truffle cream hit the spot. Linefish in cucumber broth, oysters, or prawns with tagliatelle satisfy the seafood cravings. Then hearty meat dishes include venison loin with pommes Anna; smoked chicken with roast garlic ricotta; or grilled lamb kidney on polenta.

Not forgetting dessert, which comes in a choice of two portion sizes, designed for those sweet-tooth moments when you’re officially full but just can’t resist the temptation of bavarois with poached peaches; chocolate terrine; sticky toffee pudding and banana ice cream; or a vanilla crème brûlée.
