Lanzerac Taphuis: Gourmet Pub Fare in Beautiful, Historic Surroundings
Relaxed summer lunches on a shaded terrace.
By Inside Guide • 20 December 2022
With its historical architecture dating back 330 years, spreading oak trees and glorious mountain views, Lanzerac is undoubtedly Stellenbosch’s most gracious grande dame. At the Taphuis, all this colourful history is on show within the age-old stone walls together with a relaxed country charm. Wooden beams, brick floors, a huge fireplace and long hand-crafted wooden bar create a welcoming and cosy pub vibe for cooler weather. In summer, the broad, umbrella-shaded terrace is the place to be, looking over lawns and gardens with glimpses of the Jonkershoek mountains through the trees.
Gourmet pub fare South African style

Chef Stephen Fraser looks to local traditions for inspiration for the hearty collection of sharing plates, light meals and mains that form the backbone of the pub menu. Think skaapstertjies (sheep tails), biltong gnocchi, braaibroodjie (fire-grilled cheese sandwich) and smoked-snoek mousse among the small plates, which can be for sharing or starters. Then pub-style classics such as smoked pork belly, chicken potjie and fish and chips; or a selection of burgers and steaks, which come with a choice of regular or wagyu beef. A short and versatile kids’ menu makes this one for all the family.
Summer sweetness
A new summer dessert menu completes the meal with a sweet flourish. Perhaps lavender and Earl Grey panna cotta, Mrs English baked cheesecake, or a light citrus fruit parfait?
Time for some lazy alfresco Lanzerac lunching this summer.
