A winning Winelands recipe for all-day family dining.
Just outside Paarl, Nederburg Wine Farm is a popular Winelands destination with The Manor restaurant at its heart. The beautifully reimagined building (dating back to 1791) boasts breathtaking views of the Drakenstein mountains and the farm’s vineyards, opening out onto gardens and lawns (where kids can run and play on the jungle gym and ziplines).
“Our accent is on mindful dining, whatever your choice: local and lekker or more exotic,” says manager, Jerry Kennedy. Designed to cover all dietary persuasions (and kids preferences, too) the versatile menu has something for everyone, and suggests well-matched pairings for each dish with the winery’s award-winning wines.
A menu for all seasons
Think Asian-inspired freshness in starters such as the harvest poke bowl and the seasonal stir-fry; local-is-lekker spices and aromas in the Cape Malay beef tartare. For mains, there’s the amasi-fried chicken burger (served on pickled cabbage), plankie steaks and pork belly ramen when you’re in the mood for meat. And don’t miss the seared trout (farmed on the property in an eco-sensitive aquaponics project that also produces herbs, exotic lettuces and vegetables for the restaurant). Plus, there’s a daily specials board.
An imaginative dessert menu plays on old favourites: a white-chocolate fondant with pumpkin as a secret ingredient; or buchu-infused amasi parfait. Or finish with a cheese platter that goes wonderfully with a glass of The Winemasters Noble Late Harvest.
The Manor House restaurant also serves breakfast and brunch (until 11.30am) and a selection of platters and snack boards.
Picnic pursuits
Spread out on The Manor lawns with a beautifully packed picnic basket. Blankets, cushions, crockery and glasses are all provided along with a bottle of bubbly or your wine of choice from The Winemasters collection. Classics such as bitterballen, chicken wings, sweet and sour pork ribs, salads and vegetable crisps, as well as freshly baked breads, local cheeses and preserves, make up the alfresco feast. There is also a vegetarian picnic option, and kids’ picnic and party box offerings.
