The Poké Co Claremont: Bowls of Goodness in the Southern Suburbs

Poké perfection arrives in Claremont.

When 34-year-old co-founder of The Poké Co Andrew Flanagan signed the lease for a Claremont store (his fourth in two years, and first in the southern suburbs), he had no idea Covid-19 was about to hit! That was in February 2020; a month later Level 5 Lockdown was announced, putting the kibosh on sit-down meals in restaurants

Andrew spent the next few months kitting out the store, which opened its doors in August 2020, in the throes of Covid-19. “The pandemic obviously affected turnover across all industries, and we were no exception,” he explains. “Luckily we had an existing takeaway business that we could lean on.”

Ever-optimistic, Andrew believes the location of the Claremont shop – in the heart of a residential and retail pocket – is ideally positioned to service the surrounding corporate lunch trade. “Poké is the perfect, grab-and-go meal that lends itself to customers’ current behaviours, with social distancing and all.”

About the food

There are nine signature bowls (The Windward is our favourite), and customers also have the option to build their own bowls, with the following easy steps:

  1. Select your base: sticky rice, kale and red cabbage, glass noodles, brown rice or quinoa.
  2. Decide on your protein: fresh salmon, tuna, tofu, prawn, beef brisket or shredded chicken.
  3. Select your toppings and the dressings you’d like.

As for the breakfast options, they sound, look and taste like dessert! We’re talking Apple Crumble Oats (cold apple-soaked creamy oats and plain yoghurt, topped with hot burnt vanilla apple, micro-textured milk and toasted almond flakes) and Strawberries-and-Cream Chia Pudding (chilled coconut chia pudding with strawberry compote, toasted coconut flakes, whipped coconut cream and fresh strawberries), among seven other options!

Aloha from Honolulu

All four stores (Loop Street, Kloof Street, Sea Point and now Claremont) are washed in a palette of pale pink, with ultra-contemporary finishes – and a subtle surf aesthetic – making you feel like you’re on holiday in Hawaii – especially after you’ve taken your first bite.

Says Andrew: “Poké is all the delicious flavours of sushi, served – and enjoyed – in a unique, spontaneous and convenient way,” says Andrew. “If you love sushi, but want something more comforting – and less symmetrical – you’ll love poké!”
