Rhebokskloof

Winding up the long farm road to Rhebokskloof feels like a journey of discovery. The wine estate’s natural amphitheatre of vine-clad slopes is tucked into a fold at the northern end of Paarl Mountain, rugged fynbos-clad slopes meeting vines halfway. A family-friendly oasis of nature-infused tranquillity, it’s surrounded by old oaks, with lawns running down to a wide dam from the old farmhouse stoep, where The Rhebok restaurant spills out and down the steps to tables on a wide, umbrella-shaded terrace below. There’s endless space for laidback picnics, and a jungle gym close by for kids to play.

Farmhouse flair

Rhebokskloof: Restaurant

A welcoming farmhouse-kitchen ambience prevails inside the farm restaurant, decorated with old photos relating to the history of the farm (which dates back to 1697) and patterned plates on a cheerful lemon trellis wallpaper. Victorian sash windows open on to the wide stoep looking over oak trees, lawns and the sparkle of the dam beyond.

Contemporary summer comfort food

Rhebokskloof: Summer Menu

Hearty country fare laces nostalgic food memory with contemporary twists. Among the generous starters are a crispy roast pork belly with a tangy Waldorf slaw, salt-and-pepper squid cooked Cantonese style and West Coast mussels in a rich chardonnay sauce. Mains go from the simplicity of sirloin steak and hasselback potatoes or the popular Rhebok beef burger, to pistachio-crumbed venison loin, or confit duck leg.

Rhebokskloof: Pizza

The crisp thin-based wood-fired pizzas have acquired a following too – they cover all bases from family-friendly simplicity to gourmet toppings of brie and prosciutto, and a delightful vegetarian option loaded with harissa-spiced flavour punch.

Breakfast

Rhebokskloof: Breakfast

As a starting point for the Paarl network of mountain-biking trails, The Rhebok is also a popular breakfast spot. A short menu (served until 11am) includes a traditional farm breakfast, breakfast buns, hot oats and granola bowls, with an apple pie waffle tempting the sweet tooth.

Kids’ menu

Rhebokskloof: Kids Menu

The Little Buck menu starts with breakfast options of scrambled egg on toast or berry waffle, then dives into lunch treats of kid-size burgers, chicken strips and wood-fired pizzas. Waffles, ice cream and plenty of sprinkles, milkshakes and Las Paletas ice lollies seal the family-time fun.

Rhebokskloof: Setting

An idyllic escape for all the family, Rhebokskloof is a Paarl Winelands hidden gem to return to throughout the year.
