Theo’s Taverna: An Authentic Greek Restaurant in Hermanus

With its cobalt-drenched décor and a bougainvillaea-festooned pergola, Theo’s Taverna feels like a slice of the Greek Islands has sprung up in Hermanus’ Harbour Road. A map of Greece and old photos on the whitewashed walls and blue-checked tablecloths in the shaded courtyard set a charming backdrop for a simple and delicious menu of authentic Greek cuisine.

Owners Theo and Claudelle Stathoulis moved to the seaside town after 20 years in the Gauteng restaurant industry, determined to create an oasis of Greek food heritage that supports local suppliers and caters for Hermanus locals.

Kalimera Hermanus

A glossary of simple Greek phrases on a corner of the menu (kalimera means good morning) gets you in a Mediterranean-holiday mood as you choose between classic starters such as dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), spanakopita (spinach and cheese in phyllo pastry) and keftedes (beef meatballs). There’s pita with tzatziki and taramasalata, souvlaki skewers of pork, lamb, chicken or rump steak, yiros (grilled pitas stuffed with falafel, or a choice of meats, and salad), and a tempting selection of Greek-style grills and seafood mains, not forgetting the vegetarian moussaka.

Sweet Greek treats

Sweet-toothed treats major on classic syrup-drenched pastries: baklava, kataifi or loukoumades (deep-fried fluffy honey balls). Or just go for a simple bowl of creamy Greek yoghurt topped with honey and nuts.

Thelo Krasi: I want wine

There’s no need to develop a taste for retsina, however – a winelist chosen from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley stars Creation, Benguela Cove, Hermanuspietersfontein and Suiderkunz, among other locals. And beers are from Folk & Goode and the Hermanus Brewing Company.
