Exclusive Interview: Rich Mnisi on Cape Town
The celebrated South African designer, 32, on his favourite restaurants, design and fashion haunts, and NYE on the beach.

I was born in Kempton Park and raised between Kempton Park, Soweto and Johannesburg.
The things I love about Cape Town are its natural beauty, the quality of the food, and its cultural scene. Being a “tourist city”, there’s something for everyone: world-class museums, art studios, private and niche galleries, and theatres. I love the coffee shops-turned-hang-out spots. And, of course, the breathtaking beaches – we have captured the most amazing fashion campaigns across the city. But mostly, I love the people.
When I visit Cape Town, I love to eat at Duchess of Wisbeach. This discreet, intimate restaurant turns into the biggest party after the kitchen closes. It always creates lasting memories for me and my friends.

My go-to breakfast is Between Us on Bree Street.
I never miss the New Year’s party at Cabo Beach Club. It’s the best party treat for the ultimate beach experience with the greatest music.
The best restaurant meal I’ve had was The Chef’s Menu at La Colombe, Constantia. Arguably the best dining experience I have encountered.
My (other) favourite CT restaurants are Kloof Street House. I always order the Moroccan-spiced lamb, with herbed couscous, red cabbage, cucumber slaw with tahini yoghurt. Grand Pavilion’s oysters are another go-to, and anything from the Delaire Graff restaurant.

My favourite design shops in Cape Town are Crema, Okha and Pezula Interiors – all beautifully curated.
For local fashion, I always pop into Duck Duck Goose and AKJP. And, of course, MaXhosa – he’s amazing.

I am currently watching Mmangaliso Nzuza, Jozua Gerrard and Manyaku Mashilo: three local artists who are so brilliant at what they do and a great representation of South African art.
My favourite galleries in Cape Town are Southern Guild, 16 on Leratholi and WHATIFTHEWORLD.
My favourite cocktail is the Pornstar Martini, always from Kloof Street House.

I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t ever hiked up Table Mountain. It’s on my bucket list.
Best coffee? Truth Coffee.
Best pizza? Pizza Warehouse at The Yard.
Best burger? Anvil.
I’m currently busy with my solo exhibition of collectible design, Dzuvula, on at Southern Guild until 18 April, as well as our AW24 collection coming out in March.

Catch Rich Mnisi’s exhibition, Dzuvula at Southern Guild. Meaning “shedding skin”, his solo exhibition explores the cosmology of duality, drawing inspiration from the snake, which symbolises fear and beauty. It showcases a collection of sculptural bronze furniture.
