Seth Rotherham on Cape Town

Seth Rotherham on Cape Town

The 2oceansvibe founder, 32, has a pizza and cocktail named after him and he’s about to become a dad!

I was born and raised at Cavendish Square.

What I love most about living in Cape Town is the lifestyle – it’s second to none! The proximity and juxtaposition of so many different experiences; the ease of getting from hiking on Table Mountain or hanging at Café Caprice or the beach in Camps Bay, to sipping fine wine at Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek in one hour. So many starkly different scenarios – all equally as beautiful in their own unique way, yet so close to each other.

When out-of-towners come to town, most of our activities include eating and drinking. We’ll grab a buffet breakfast at the Oasis Bistro at the Mount Nelson – nothing beats a hotel brekkie buffet. And, at some point we’ll tick off:

  • Café Caprice in Camps Bay for a 2oceansvibe cocktail
  • Quaglino’s in Mouille Point for some cool bar dining (and the ‘Smokey Seth’ feat. Jack Daniel’s cocktail)
  • La Perla in Sea Point – an absolute institution, with great views of the promenade
  • Haute Cabrière in Franschhoek – crazy-good food and killer views with copious amounts of Pierre Jourdan bubbly! The tomato soup starter will blow your mind.
  • On the last night we collapse with a pizza from Butler’s – Cape Town’s number one. They usually go for The Rotherham (bacon, salami and feta), which comes standard with half the normal cheese and a thin base.

The best meal I’ve eaten recently was The Dreamy Burger at Café Caprice with a cold Grolsch. It’s called that for a reason.

An annual Cape Town event I always attend is the L’ormarins Queen’s Plate horse race. They do it better (than the other one) and it’s a tad more civilised…

My favourite weekend getaway is Grootbos Nature Reserve just outside Hermanus. The beauty, peace and tranquility (let alone the food and service) renews the body and invigorates the senses. Plus, no-one will find you until you get back!

I’m finishing off my private pilot’s licence, so I have maps open at home and the options are endless! So many nature reserves and farms and seaside towns to visit. But now they’ll just become easier to get to.

The best coffee in my area is from Vida e Caffè – mucho cappuccino to “hamba”!

The best walk in my area is from the pipe track along Table Mountain. We live at the top of Camps Bay, so my wife and I often walk out our front door and onto it… It’s also Lacoste – our chocolate labrador’s favourite!

The Banting diet is not my vibe. I do one to three runs from Camps Bay to Bantry Bay every week and that’s fine.

Bugger the red wine! Get the Haute Cabrière pinot noir and keep a bucket of ice handy. You’ve never been happier.

I’m currently busy with 2oceansvibe News and Radio; we’ve just launched Get Jet (affordable private-jet travel in SA); I co-founded and am working hard on OurHood (SA’s fastest-growing social network for neigbourhoods; I co-host the Tech Report on ENCA (channel 403) every Thursday night at 9.30pm; I’m completing my private pilot’s license; and our baby is expected to enter the world in the first week of February!

On Sundays Butler’s pizza and Carte Blanche.

Straight after this I’m going home to swim.

When I wake up in the middle of the night I usually need a pee and hope I fall asleep again. Otherwise it’s gonna be a long day.

One day the world will live as one.
