Handcrafted and heaven-sent.
While on the hunt for good-quality chocolate decorations for Christmas, home chef and entrepreneur Debbie Taylor, and her husband Jan, spotted a gap in the local South African market. Lovers of fine chocolate, the couple soon realised that South Africa was lacking in the luxury-chocolate department. And so, Hippolytas was born – its name inspired by the Greek mythological character and Queen of the Amazons.
After completing a course at a renowned chocolate workshop in Belgium, Debbie spent countless hours developing her skills as a chocolatier – testing, sampling, refining and innovating to create the excellent-quality chocolates, which are now available at their stall in the V&A Food Market.
While flavour is definitely at the forefront of Debbie and Jan’s mission, the Hippolytas brand also prides itself on honest, ethical, sustainable practices. Their chocolate is sourced from Belgian brand Callebaut because their product is 100% traceable and sustainable (and, obviously, the most delicious).
Some of Debbie’s delectable Hippolytas creations include:
- Hot Choc Stix
- champagne truffles infused with Graham Beck Bubbly
- key lime pie truffle with dark chocolate, condensed milk and fresh lime
- ruby chocolate hearts with oozing passionfruit filling
- milk tart pralines covered in dark chocolate
- at-home fondue kits
Taste your way through the chocolates at their Waterfront stall, grab a bag of takeaway treats or create a gift drawer for a special someone – the world is your truffle!
