The Farm Grocer at Laborie: Organic Groceries in Paarl

Farm fresh produce (and lots more) on your sustainable shopping list.

A cornucopia of beautifully displayed farm produce is the reward for stepping inside the Farm Grocer at Laborie. The heritage wine estate at the foot of Paarl Mountain has gathered together local organic produce and artisanal producers (including freshly baked goodies from its Stoep restaurant) in a welcoming new space that makes grocery shopping a delight. And it covers pretty much all you need to cook up a storm… or put together a picnic feast.

Fresh from the farms

“The Farm Grocer is where our chef shops,” says Laborie, and you can see why. As well as fresh organic fruit and vegetables, pasture-raised eggs, fresh dairy products and pantry staples, there’s a raft of cheeses and charcuterie, and a speciality butcher shop, The Boer and Butcher. A shared vision of sustainable living puts the focus here on local pasture-raised meat (the biltong was voted best in the Western Cape).

While you’re there, take your own containers and fill them up with extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and raw honey on tap, or grains, nuts, seeds and legumes by weight.

Sweet treats and ready meals

Stoep, the estate’s bistro-style restaurant, also stocks the shelves of the Farm Grocer with baked treats (choc-chip cookies, anyone?) and frozen meals, plus aioli, kimchi and pickled spekboom. And there’s fresh pasta too, made every morning at the Farm Grocer.

Stellar cellar

Browse further and you’ll discover the La Cave wine shop (French for cellar) stocked with the most exciting wines of the Drakenstein region (as well as Laborie’s own vintages) and a curated selection of imported wines. The plan is to host wine-tasting evenings here.
