A cool kind of comfort food.
When it was co-founded by Colombian-born Diana Chavarro in 2012, Las Paletas (Spanish for “the ice lollies”) filled a gap in the local market for naturally made (read: preservative-free) popsicles.
So, it was hardly surprising that the well-loved brand would open a stand-alone stall at one of the busiest hubs in Cape Town, the V&A Food Market.
Lollies to make you jolly
Delicious and nutritious, all Las Paletas ice creams are handmade in small batches using top-quality ingredients and free from flavourants, colourants, stabilisers, preservatives and gluten. The watermelon-and-mint sorbet is light and utterly refreshing! And, if you’re in need of some cool comfort, the dairy lollies will hit the spot. Our favourites are Brownie Cheesecake and Belgian Chocolate.
Chocoholics will feel like they’ve died and gone to cocoa heaven, with the chocolate-dipped ice creams, flecked with either coffee, nougat or salted caramel.
The scoop on scoops
If you’d still prefer the creamy appeal of a classic scoop, you simply must try an ice cream cone. A relatively new addition to the Las Paletas range, their ice cream is available by the scoop in a cone or cup, or in a takeaway tub for at-home enjoyment. We have it on good authority that S’mores and Lemon Meringue are the flavours to try!
In addition to sugar-free options, there’s a vegan range, made using probiotic-packed kefir from Truly Kefir, which includes flavours such as Ginger Miso, Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter.
Market value
So, next time you’re at the V&A Waterfront, and you need a sweet pitstop between shopping, swing by this marvellous stall for a refreshing treat.
