Started at Die Ou Pastorie, where he washed dishes and peeled onions for six months. Studied professional cooking in Stellenbosch. Worked with Mike Bassett, then Richard Carstens, at Shoga & Ginja restaurant.
Did stints at various restaurants in Melbourne and Copenhagen, before returning to South Africa and opening The Kitchen at Maison in Franschhoek in 2011. Worked there until 2017, when he moved to the city and opened Janse & Co with his partner, Liezl Odendaal. The stylish Kloof Street eatery quickly earned a place as one of the top-rated restaurants in Cape Town.
