Current Co-owner and chef at Bovine in Franschhoek

For a casual meal Without being too biased, Bovine! But if I had to pick my second then I would say Bread & Wine on Môreson, purely for the fact the service is always excellent; it’s a chilled spot under the vines; and the charcuterie and breads are always world-class. Simply put, Neil sources the best raw materials and churns out something special, and it’s always consistent.
For a special occasion La Colombe, Constantia. Best Restaurant in South Africa by a country mile. Both food and service consistently world-class each and every time. Menu is impeccably well-put-together, but also executed to the same standard, the same goes for the wine list. Great for lunch, even better for dinner.
For a guilty pleasure Without being biased, Bovine again. I’m proud to say it’s where most of the chefs in Franschhoek come for a bite and a pint, with a fair few from Stellenbosch and Cape Town, which was what I wanted to achieve.
For a Winelands experience The Restaurant at Cavalli. Mike’s [Michael Deg] cooking is some of the best around, menus are always innovative but still backed up by good solid cooking. Wine service is always attentive and extremely knowledgeable. One of those places that never disappoints.
For authentic cuisine For Thai food, Indochine at Delaire Graff. Anything else is usually a letdown. Virgil [Kahn]’s balance of spice is always spot on, meals are always light and packed with a punch.
For Japanese, Genki Sushi Bar & Japanese Tapas. All of the dishes have been consistently good for years.
Best new restaurant Le Coin Français. Darren [Badenhorst] is cooking some really good food, paired with very good service.
Best “oldie but goodie” Magica Roma in Pinelands. Simple cooking done very well.
