Alto Wine Club: Superb Reds from Stellenbosch’s Golden Triangle

If you’re looking for red-wine history in a bottle, you’ve come to the right place. Alto Wine Estate is celebrating 100 consecutive vintages of its Alto Rouge red blend this year. It’s the oldest dedicated red-wine producer in South Africa with a long tradition of superlative red wines created by only five winemakers over those 100 years.

Its glorious setting – on the Helderberg slopes, within Stellenbosch’s golden triangle (famed for its big red wines) – is another reason to visit. Drink in the views over the vine-swathed hills to Table Mountain as you sip and swirl, on the shaded terrace and lawns or cosy by a fireplace in winter.

Tastings and pairings

With two classic tasting flights plus cheese and charcuterie platters to feast on, Alto makes the decision even harder with an additional two creative pairing experiences. Savour four biltongs cured in Alto wines, plus blue cheese for the fifth wine. Or go for the smoked-cheese-and-wine pairing for another umami taste journey.
