There are numerous ways to witness the wonders of Cape Point, but approaching it from the ocean must surely be one of the most powerful, as you’ll be gazing upon the very sight that prompted Sir Francis Drake to proclaim this “the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the Earth”.
With Simon’s Town Boat Company, you can do exactly that. Their guided boat tours offer passengers the perfect vantage point to gaze upon towering cliffs jutting out into the vast ocean.
Point the way
The tour departs from Town Pier in Simon’s Town, and lasts two hours. Along the way, you’ll have opportunities to glimpse the variety of wildlife that inhabits this diverse biosphere, including numerous bird species, seals, whales (in season), and dolphins.
The ship’s captain will regale you with tales of the region’s fascinating history, including stories of the many shipwrecks that lie strewn across the coast, and of escaped slaves who sought shelter in hidden caves.
And on the return trip to Simon’s Town, you’ll pass by Boulder’s, where you can view the African Penguin Colony from the seaward side.
So, while Cape Point is awesome to behold whether approaching from land or sea, you’ll want to see it the way old-world explorers did at least once in your life.
