The Cellars-Hohenort Gourmet Picnics: Alfresco Feasts in Constantia
Time for an idyllic summer picnic under the camphor trees.
By Inside Guide • November 08, 2023
Rolling lawns to spread out on, ancient (and gigantic!) camphor trees for shade, and intriguing garden and woodland paths to explore, the gardens at The Cellars-Hohenort are the ideal setting for an alfresco feast. There’s endless space to spread out a picnic blanket in splendid seclusion in this idyllic Constantia Valley (a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of World group) that feels like a rural retreat, even though it’s only minutes from the city.
What’s in the basket

The chefs from The Conservatory restaurant fill classic wicker baskets to the brim with gorgeous goodies, so all you need to decide is what to drink. A chilled bottle of cap classique (or even Champagne) for some celebratory bubbles suits the ambience to perfection.
Included in your basket are:
- tapas: spicy marinated olives, feta-stuffed peppadews, hummus
- olive and sundried tomato focaccia bread
- sticky chicken thigh skewers
- mini free-range beef sliders
- tangy coleslaw
- decadent chocolate brownies
- seasonal fruit salad
- Appletiser
Cost R395 per person
There’s more

Personalise your basket with one or two individually-priced items from the add-on menu, which include treats such as pulled lamb panini, roast butternut and feta salad, roast vegetable wraps, cake jars, and a variety of charcuterie and cheese platters.
Picnics for kids

Have kids along for a relaxed family outing? Just select their favourite spoil from the add-on menu, which includes mini boerewors rolls, burgers, chicken wraps and a sweet surprise. There’s even a baby purée menu too.
Settle in for a leisurely afternoon in these historic gardens, serenaded by birdsong in gourmet picnic style.
