Food Route Organic Food Tours
Ecofriendly walkabouts focusing on farming fresh produce.
By Sharon Kariwo • 08 October 2014
What started as a WDC2014 project aimed at making Cape Town an edible and equitable city, the City of Eden initiative has now turned into an opportunity for city dwellers to learn more about the impact of urban farming.
If urban farming and a sustainable existence interest you, then why not sign up for one of the Food Route Organic Food and Urban Farm Tours – an exciting way to explore Cape Town’s city farms, discover and harvest fruit and vegetable varieties not available in supermarkets, explore edible gardens, and just simply enjoy the bliss of being surrounded by nature’s gifts.
The tours aren’t just about food. You’ll get to learn fascinating tidbits about Cape Town’s lesser-known history, which offers a fascinating insight into how the city has managed to feed itself in the past and how it will manage to do so in the present and future.
Some of the topics include:
- how past events, such as the Anglo-Boer war and the Gold Rush, are connected to the way food is grown today, and how the natural landscape determined settlement of the Khoi-San
- how the first settler farmers grew fresh fruit and vegetables to supply passing ships
- the meaning of the urban agriculture and sustainable farming
- what the ancient art of seed-bombing is
- information about the underground rivers throughout the city
From October, the public will be able to sign up for one of these amazing Food Route Summer tours:
- Historical City Farm tours
- Township Farm tours
- Edible Garden tours
- Fynbos and Forest Foraging tours
- Tours for Corporates
- Tours for Kids
- Bees, Baking, Brewing and Making
Scheduled tours cost between R220 and R280 depending on the tour, while ad hoc private groups of up to 14 people cost R420 per person (also tour-dependent).
