Hazendal Spa: Fynbos-Scented Massages + Hammam Rituals

Deep relaxation with a sense of place.

Hazendal Spa
Hazendal Spa

A tranquil path through landscaped indigenous gardens leads to the spa at Hazendal, starting the relaxation process before you even reach the doors. Light-filled, tranquil and welcoming, the spa adjoins the boutique hotel on this Bottelary Hills wine estate, with views out over a farm dam to the vine-clad slopes: from the reception as you sip a welcome tea (rooibos, baobab and mango on the day we visited), and from the relaxation room in-between sessions. With two treatment pergolas on the deck beside the dam, two indoor treatment rooms, a hammam and a nail studio, the spa feels luxurious and intimate. The thoughtful signature treatments are designed to enfold you in fynbos aromas and indigenous botanicals, grounding you intentionally in the South African landscapes as you unwind.

Signature spa ceremonies

Hazendal Spa Experience

Wrapped in a comfortable robe, there’s a fynbos-scented magic to the apothecary experience that starts off the signature Fynbos Ceremony by Terres D’Afrique. Buchu, imphepho, snowbush, baobab and several more botanicals fill a tray, as your therapist explains the properties of each and invites you to create your own personalised body scrub. The steamy hammam session takes you deep into the scents of Cape mountainsides through the scrub and body mask that follows, while you steam gently under the starlit ceiling and let go of the stresses of daily life.

Hazendal Spa Treatment Room

A rain shower then a snack break (with juice shots and divine date balls!) in the relaxation room gives you time to pause. Then it’s time to choose three essential oils (another delightful sensory experience) for a customised blend to match your mood and wellness needs in a full body massage, where any remaining tension is deftly soothed away. And a hot massage with jasper crystals and a resonant sound journey to finish. I floated out on a cloud of bliss after this, skin soft and smooth, and relaxed in every fibre of my being!
