Its layout is one of the nicest around – with food, craft and fashion stalls arranged in a horseshoe shape around a communal eating area, and lovely views of the Hottentots Holland mountains. So it’s not surprising that the Lourensford Market continues to draw loyal locals and out-of-town visitors to its weekly events: every Sunday from 10am to 3pm, and Friday evenings from 5pm to 9pm between September and May.
The market launched in October 2014, but underwent a big renovation in 2015, to create more seating and to make the space weather-proof. With beautiful, award-winning gardens surrounding it, and an area dedicated to children (with fun activities such as face painting), there is little this market doesn’t have. It’s even dog-friendly! Plus, it’s completely under cover – which means you’re sheltered from the sun in summer, and the rain in winter.
Friday Evening Twilight Markets
Every year, when spring is supposed to have sprung (yeah, right, Cape Town!), the Lourensford markets reopen. From September 2018 through until end-May 2019, you’ll be able to kickstart your weekend at the Friday evening markets, and ease into Sunday at the Lourensford day markets.
Stand-out stalls include:
- Casa Valdez for hearty spare ribs
- The Samoosa Specialist for gourmet samoosas
- The Magnificent Barista Boys for great coffee
- The Fudge Kitchen for top-notch fudge
- Dr Juice’s fresh fruit and vegetable juices
- Tunisian Delight’s tapas
- Ghenwa’s Lebanese treats (paired with Lourensford’s award-winning wines)
- Corlie’s Italian (from gnocchi to arancini)
So, whether you prefer your markets at night or during the day, you can have the best of both worlds at Lourensford. See you there for some festive family fun.
