A mind-bending playground of alternate reality.
Brand new to Cape Town, the Museum of Illusions is a space where science, art, psychology and wonder meet in a most magical way. Like Alice in Wonderland, you can grow bigger or shrink right down; or clone into dozens of versions of yourself – to infinity even; or lose your head (literally) and swap it with someone else’s.
Do the time warp
Cape Town’s Museum of Illusions contains more than 60 illusions, offering a journey of discovery unlike any other. You’ll get lost in immersive rooms, interactive installations, holograms, shape-shifters, puzzles and optical illusions, as they challenge how we see the world and ourselves. It’s all designed to trick your brain and warp reality, but there are also scientific explanations that get to the bottom of each exhibit.
Try to get through The Vortex, which seems to be spinning but isn’t; enter the gravity-defying Tilted Room; fall without falling; or step into a kaleidoscope and become part of the mesmerising pattern. This is an experience that will bend time too – before you know it, two hours will have passed.
A world of wonder
The Museum of Illusions started in Croatia in 2015, and in 10 years it’s spread all around the globe, to become a must-see attraction in cities from Zagreb to Athens, from New York to London, Paris, Dubai, Vegas and beyond. Cape Town’s museum is the 61st in the world, and the fourth in Africa (the others are in Joburg, Nairobi and Cairo).
Every museum is uniquely designed and location-specific, but they all include a fantastical mix of awe-inspiring, goosebump-inducing, hands-on experiences. Perfect for all ages, it makes for a great school-holiday outing for children, a fun date-night destination, or a unique team-building get-together – plus a visit here will definitely level-up your selfie game and social posts. You can also book the space for special private events, such as birthday parties, launches, receptions and workshops.
All you need is to bring your curiosity. The Museum of Illusions does the rest, making the impossible possible.

This museum is amazing and highly recommended for the school holidays. It was so interactive and there were lots of helpers on hand to take photos for you. My son and his friends loved it, and learnt a lot too!
