Surrounded by perfectly manicured gardens, with sweet-scented rose bushes and towering oaks, the warm and welcoming Tasting Room is the ideal spot for a wonderful day out with friends and family. 

While the estate’s celebrated fine-dining restaurant in the adjacent building offers a more formal evening experience, the Tasting Room is ideal for a laidback country-style lunch accompanied by some exceptional, full-bodied red wines.

Simple and utterly delicious, the Winemaker’s Lunch is served daily on the terrace or inside the cosy Tasting Room. There is a choice of three mains with a glass of wine:

  • Chalmar sirloin steak, with French fries, a garden salad and Rust en Vrede Estate’s red blend (R300)
  • Norwegian salmon, with baby potatoes, asparagus and Donkiesbaai Steen (chenin blanc) (R350)
  • Chalmar pepper-crusted fillet, with French fries, a garden salad and the Estate Vineyards Syrah (R300)

There is also a list of wines by the glass, should you want to try something else before or after your meal, such as the Single Vineyards options or the top-of-the-range 1694 Classification.

Rust en Vrede: Tasting Room & Winemakers Lunch Outdoors

In winter, the Tasting Room is warm and cosy, thanks to two fireplaces, making it the perfect spot to huddle with a good glass of red, and admire the views through large windows. In summer, the terrace under the oaks is where wine-lovers gravitate, overlooking the very vineyards in which the wines start their journey.

For full immersion, visitors can also sit alongside the working wine cellar, or down in the cosy, underground maturation cellar surrounded by bottles of wine in the making.

There are four wine-tasting options:

  • Estate 2018 The latest vintage of Rust en Vrede’s flagship red blend: R30
  • Estate Tasting Three wines: Estate Vineyards Syrah, Estate Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and Estate red blend: R70 
  • Single Vineyard Tasting Three wines: Single Vineyard Syrah, Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, 1694 Classification (an unusual Syrah/Cab Sauv blend):  R200 (
  • Wine Club Tasting Four wines (Estate Vineyards Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Estate blend: free for members; R120 for nonmembers 
  • Vinotique Tasting Older and rare vintages R50 per glass (by proper arrangement)

Befitting the keep-it-simple philosophy of the overall experience, there are no reservations required. Just pop in and enjoy a perfectly sublime Winelands interlude.
