Spice Route Winelands Trails: Hike, Run + MTB in the Paarl Winelands
Your outdoor adventures starts here.
By Inside Guide • 25 January 2023
Spice Route’s scenic network of farm tracks and mountain trails has something for everyone, whether you plan to hike, trail-run or mountain-bike your way to adventure. Or simply stroll gently and soak up the sounds and scents of nature. Once you’ve explored to your heart’s content and hit that adrenaline high, there’s no better place to while away the rest of the day than at one of the destination’s artisan eateries, fuelling up on wood-fired pizzas, OTT burgers, craft beer, freshly roasted coffee, ice cream or farm-to-table-feasts.
Get into gear

Connecting up with Paarl Adventure Trails’ 200km network of mixed-use trails, there are nine routes starting out from Spice Route (and several more longer routes that connect). These range from an easy 2km cruise through the vineyards, through 9-10km routes exploring valleys, olive groves, paddocks, citrus orchards and mountainside, all the way up to a 60km circular MTB route around Paarl Mountain.
Passport to adventure

While day permits are ideal for the occasional dirt-track adventure, if you’re a regular weekend/weekday warrior you might want to sign up for the new annual Wine Lands Trails Regional Permit, which gives you access to over 1 300km of trails extending from Paarl and Wellington, all the way to Grabouw and the Elgin Valley.
The secret spice to fun-fuelled weekends in the great outdoors.

Good to know Pay for your day permit with Snapscan at the start of the trails, online, or by credit card at the Information Centre, where there are also showers available to clean up afterwards.
