Learn How (and Where) To Surf in Cape Town

Surf’s up!

Surfing enthusiasts will tell you there’s no greater way to destress than being out on the ocean, riding the waves. To which the uninitiated will respond: “Sounds great, but I’ll probably just end up rolling under the waves”. Well, that’ll most likely happen the first time you hop on a surfboard, but if you sign up for a few lessons at Stoked School of Surf, you could be riding waves like a pro before long.

Making Waves

Stoked’s qualified teachers give lessons to small groups of students, ensuring everyone receives the personal instruction they require. Boards and wetsuits are provided; all you’ll have to bring is a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and a bottle of water (as well as a warm sweater, in case it gets cold).

Stoked also offers private lessons that can be tailored to beginner surfers, or to intermediate surfers who wish to improve certain skills.

Other options include:

  • Uber-Stoked 4-lesson package: Four two-hour lessons over a period of a few days, or anything up to six weeks (whatever suits your schedule).
  • 2-Day Stoked Like a Local Surf Camp: A two-day surfing getaway, taking you to some of the best surfing spots on the False Bay coastline
  • 3-Day Stoked on the Southern Cape Surf Camp: A three-day surfing road trip that will give you a taste of the surfer’s lifestyle. You’ll be taken along the Southern Cape coastline to a beach house in the seaside village of Arniston, stopping at the many beautiful beaches along the way. Other activities include whale-watching in Hermanus, sandboarding, and hiking to secret caves.

Where’s the best surf?

Though its based in Camps Bay, Stoked is a mobile surf school, and offers lessons at whichever surfing spots have the best conditions on the day.

As for getting there, students have two choices. You can drive there yourself, in which case Stoked will notify you of the chosen location the day before. Or you can elect to have Stoked pick you up at one of its designated pick-up areas in the city, and drop you off once the lesson is complete.

If you’re already an experienced surfer, but don’t know which beach has the best conditions on the day, Stoked offers surf guiding experiences, during which its experienced guides will pick you up from where you live (or are staying, if you’re an out-of-towner) and take you the best spot. Though the option doesn’t include instruction, they’ll be happy to paddle out with you and advise you on potential dangers, such as rip currents and so on.
