The small farming town of Wellington has an authentic, hidden-gem appeal that stands out among its more-polished Winelands neighbours. Down to earth, unpretentious with an outdoor lifestyle of mountain trails, hidden waterfalls and slow farm living, it’s as much about people as it is about places. Their resourceful stories emerge through passion projects, restored heritage buildings and fynbos-scented landscapes, making something special out of what’s available.

Val du Charron, as it used to be known (or Valley of the Wagon Maker) is known for its fruit growing, for brandy, wine and as a vine nursery growing stokkies (cuttings) for much of the Cape’s wine industry. Unexpected farms are hidden away in secret valleys, or off the winding road up to the scenic Bainskloof Pass and the Limietberg Nature Reserve. Truly off the beaten path, these are hidden gems you have to seek out: away-from-it-all stays that encourage you to slow down in nature, long-table lunches in the heart of the family, fascinating wine-tastings, and unique experiences that you won’t find anywhere else.

Bainskloof Pass

Wellington Bainskloof Pass Hiking

Scenic drive to river hikes and wild-swimming spots
Bainskloof Pass crosses the Limietberg Nature Reserve to connect Wellington with Ceres. Designed by pioneering road engineer Andrew Geddes Bain and completed in 1853, the 18km pass is a national monument and offers a famously scenic drive through the kloof created by the Witte River. It also gives access to a number of tempting hikes and swimming spots. From De Nek or Eerste Tol (also the site of the Bainskloof Country Lodge), you can access the 9km out-and-back Happy Valley Trail, one of the easiest in the area, which heads to the fabulous Junction Pools (where the Witte meets the Bobbejaans River). The 8km out-and-back Bobbejaans River Trail leads past the pools to a lovely waterfall, while the 8km Rockhopper Trail makes its way along the boulder-strewn Witte River past several swimming spots to finish at Tweede Tol, which sits further along the pass. Tweede Tol, super-popular for its easy access to these swimming spots, includes a picnic area and overnight campsite.
Good to know Hiking is limited to 50 people per trail per day, and the Tweede Tol picnic site is limited to 120 visitors a day. Booking is essential. Note that no dogs are allowed in CapeNature reserves.
Cost Day access to the reserve: R55 (adult); R35 (child, 4 – 17 years)

Abel

Wellington Abel

Seasonal farm-to-table dining
Abel is a true hidden gem – and a rare one, with only a few farm-to-table lunches and dinners served each summer (from October to March). You’ll find it on Onverwacht Farm, recently restored by Julia and Pieter Wiemers, who have also created the boutique Meisiekind Wines label. The restaurant is centred around the simple Cape Dutch langhuis, built in the late 1600s, with tables spilling out into the garden under big trees (strung with fairylights for magical evening meals). Julia creates a seasonal, multicourse set menu inspired by whatever is in their vegetable garden, and from local artisanal producers. The name Abel honours the family’s ridgeback, who happily greets all visitors – and underscores the laidback, homely atmosphere of the restaurant and farm.
Good to know There is a stylish two-bedroom cottage to rent should you wish to stay longer, soak up farm life, swim in the dam and experience the sauna with a view.
Cost R1 250 (including wine + water)

Beguiling slow-food farm lunches
Hidden below the Limietberg mountains outside Wellington, Oaklands Farm brims with rustic charm. Here artists and devoted “slow foodies” Rose and AJ Williams have converted the old stables into a kitchen and dining room, with views across lawns and paddocks to the mountains. On sunny weekends the dappled shade of wild olive trees falls on tables laid with white tablecloths and silverware; in cooler weather there’s a cosy fireplace inside. A four-course, home-cooked luncheon of uncomplicated, generous food uses the best local produce for a menu of seasonal salads, fresh homemade pasta and fynbos-grazed beef. Enjoy a post-prandial hike, laze on the grass or enjoy the bird life along the river in this away-from-it-all rural idyll.

Bosman Family Vineyards

Wellington Bosman Family Vineyards

Innovative wine-tastings on a historic family wine farm
The Bosman family have been Wellington vine growers for eight generations, and this farm exudes history – yet their approach is far from traditional. Their award-winning wines push the boundaries of innovation, with a Sicilian Nero d’Avola and Fides, an orange wine made with skin-on white grenache grapes, sitting alongside more traditional offerings of cabernet, cinsaut, a chenin cap classique and the Optenhorst very-old-vine chenin blanc. Sample them in the inviting Tasting Room, part of the original cellar, where as part of the tasting experience guests may wander through the cellar and look down through a framed patch of glass flooring to see where the old wine vats once stood. Cheese platters and bitterballen are on offer, and there are green lawns for kids to roam.
Good to know Thoughtfully styled and serene, the nearby Oak Room offers a secluded self-catering farmstay for two people, with thick walls, elegant arches, a cosy lounge, well-appointed kitchen and dreamy ensuite bedroom.

Cole The Eatery

Wellington: Cole The Eatery

A family friendly restaurant serving up local flavours and genuine warmth
An old wagonry next to a vineyard on the road just outside Wellington, this convivial eatery is a local favourite for casual breakfasts and lunches and vibey weekend evenings. Hands-on owners Jonathan and Nicole Buirski started out with a coffee shop next door and have since expanded into the atmospheric brick-walled heritage space with quirky decor that is an ode to old-world transport. The wood-fired pizza oven and seasonal menu of Mediterranean-inspired favourites echo the views over the vines, as you move from classic breakfasts to burgers, salads, curries, smokey brisket, Chalmar steaks and the Neopolitan-style pizzas made with 48-hour slow-fermented dough (and extra cheese). Their thoughtful wine list champions the area’s boutique producers, and homemade Italian gelato is on offer next door at Colato Creamery, which makes for the perfect dessert.
