The Routes of Sound Music Evenings at Spier Wine Farm

The historic Spier Wine Farm resonates to a wide variety of unplugged music as The Routes of Sound returns this winter as a three-weekend series. The bite-size music festival takes you on an itinerant route around the farm in a journey of musical exploration, as small audiences wander between cosy and atmospheric venues with a fascinating line-up of local artists. Presented by Brett Bailey and Third World Bunfight, each of the three weekend events spotlights a different range of outstanding musicians, some of which you’ll have heard of, others you’ll be delighted to discover. And Spier’s superb Creative Block wines come to the party too, pairing a different wine with each venue.

Journeys of discovery

A play on the words “routes” and “roots”, this mini music festival references the paths to musical discovery you’ll be following as you stroll between venues, and the back-to-the-roots music format of enjoying music up close and unplugged. Guests divide into small groups to sample the three diverse musical acts on offer each evening, so each venue is cosy and intimate. They then come together at the end of the evening for a rousing big band concert.

Music line-ups

A different line-up for each of the three weekends tempts music lovers to book all three. 

The 3 + 4 July event includes: 

• Tubatsi Moloi: Jo’burg-based musician influenced by the sounds of blues, jazz, rock and African folk music
• Cheyenne Hill: Cape Town-based blues-folk singer.
• Mickey “Like the Mouse” Struwick: a bilingual Cape Town-based folk singer-songwriter
• Chosi: Jo’burg-based singer with soul, jazz and nesingqi influences
• Ntu2ko: Stellenbosch-based Afro-indie singer and frontman of The FreddyL Band​
• Magé Troskie: Cape Town-based folk singer, singing in “Mengsel”: a mix of English and Afrikaans​
• The Big Band: Nkosenathi Koela, Jonno Sweetman, Nomapostile, Uviwe Caso

On 31 July + 1 August the line-up features:

• Muneyi: Jo’burg-based Tshivenda folk singer and songwriter, and recipient of the 2025 Standard Bank Young Artist for Music
• RFKI + CJ Bergh
• Mana + Gabriel Sieff
• Karla von Solmes
• Jonny Smith
• Akeeda
• The Big Band: Mishy Kope

And the final weekend of 21 + 22 August spotlights:

• Sky Dlala
• Dead Dungarees (Hugo Veldsman + Kino)
• Maya Grey
• Hayley Jade
• Xhanti Nokwali
• Vuyisani Mkwambi
• The Big Band: Lungiswa Plaatjies, Reza Khota, Sean Sanby, Jonno Sweetman

Dine and stay

Settle in to your evening with an early dinner at Veld where there is a special Routes of Sound winter menu that includes a seasonal main course and a glass of Creative Block wine. Or make a weekend of it and stay the night at Spier Hotel: they’re offering a special package for the event that includes a one-night stay for two adults, dinner at Veld, two Routes of Sound tickets, and extended Buzz Club hours for children aged 3 – 12.
