JAN Innovation Studio: A Training Studio for Chefs on Kloof Street
The creations cooked up at this school will be shared with the teams at Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen’s restaurant in Nice, France; and his upcoming restaurant at Tswalu Kalahari Reserve.

South Africa’s first – and only – Michelin-starred chef is returning to his roots! Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, who grew up on a farm outside of Middleburg, Mpumalanga, took South African cuisine to the world stage when he opened his restaurant JAN, in Nice, France in 2013.
Since then, he’s been dividing his time between running the restaurant and managing JAN the Journal, a biannual publication detailing his team’s adventures as they explore the culinary world. But his two new projects – in partnership with Nicky and Jonathan Oppenheimer – are bringing his attention back to his homeland.
Homeward bound

The first is a new restaurant, Klein Jan, which is set to open in 2020 on Tswalu Kalahari, a private game reserve in the Southern Kalahari. The second, of more relevance to Capetonians, is JAN Innovation Studio, which will double as a playground for trainee chefs, and the new home of JAN the Journal.
Jan’s restaurant in Nice will continue to serve as a platform for showcasing South African culinary excellence. In fact, students of JAN Innovation Studio will be able to share their creations with the teams at JAN and Klein Jan.
Meanwhile, JAN the Journal, which is available in South Africa and Europe, will continue to provide a glimpse into Jan Hendrik‘s ideas, passion and curiosity about the culinary world, from its new base of operations in the Mother City.

Hello Jan !
I recently heard u interviewed on radio and am thrilled by your initiative to collect S A cookbooks. I volunteer at DARGs Bookshack and noticed a shelf of about 40 SA cookbooks. ❤️

Goeiemiddag, Jan
Groete
