Restaurants he rates in 2019
For a casual meal The Dog’s Bollocks at YARD. Love the collective concept, and the casual feeling with personal touches. The cure for all your pain on a Sunday morning, a superb burger and a pint.
For a special occasion Aubergine, Gardens. Chef Harald Bresselschmidt is always present – a guardian of quality and integrity. Super-fresh ingredients and not-so-common dishes for the perfect celebration evening. Fantastic winelist, with a lot of hard work behind it.
For a guilty pleasure The Oranjezicht City Farm Market at Granger Bay, Saturday and Sunday. Either to eat the one-and-only Richard Bosman’s bacon sandwiches, or the magically flavourful pho [noodle soup] from the Vietnamese lady. Pure, genuine love for food.
For a Winelands experience Delaire Graff Restaurant. A touch of class that never ends, but with no fuss. Superb service and the perfect stop during a wine trip. Views and the property are amazing and give you instant peace and reconciliation feeling.
For authentic cuisine Marika’s in Gardens. Greatly executed Greek classics, which reminds of sitting at a table with a Greek family. Informal and friendly, pleasant and comfortable.
Best new restaurant Upper Bloem in Green Point. Simply to be described as fresh air. Exciting, fun and unpretentious like everything good should be.
Best “oldie but goodie” The Butcher Shop, Mouille Point. A traditional steakhouse that never fails. Best to be consumed with brothers and few bottles of wine.
The best restaurant overall Foxcroft in Constantia. The perfect balance between formality and comfort. Incredible quality in the plates and product knowledge from the staff, from start to finish. Some standards to be inspired by, especially regarding the attention to the guest.
