The Top Restaurants in Cape Town as Voted by SA’s Top Chefs
Where do SA's top chefs eat when they're not whipping up feasts in their own kitchens?
By Inside Guide • 20 August 2025
As Cape Town’s thriving restaurant scene continues to grab international headlines and wow diners from near and far, we called on SA’s top chefs to vote for their best restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands (that is, of course, when they’re not conjuring culinary magic in their own kitchens).
We divided the questions into eight categories, to ensure we covered the gamut of experiences (and price ranges). There were several ties for second places, which shows just how many fabulous restaurants we have to choose from in and around Cape Town – even our chefs have a hard time picking just one. The winners and runners-up are revealed below.

An à la carte standout, which recently earned recognition on the World’s 50 Best Discovery List, Ouzeri is a convivial restaurant on Cape Town’s Wale Street inspired by the Cypriot heritage of owner-chef Nic Charalambous’ family. Here he and head chef Aidan Zieff recreate the regional cooking of Cyprus and Greece in a string of contemporary small plates inspired by Nic’s travels through the Mediterranean.

“Their food is lipsmackingly delicious and moreish. Their service is efficient but casual and you can be in and out quickly if that’s what you prefer.”
Jess van Dyk (Post & Pepper)
Runner-up: Ember and Oak
Now an established favourite at Constantia Uitsig, Ember & Oak has filled a gap for locals with an informal but tasty array of global tapas. Tim and Judy Pick have created a short menu of delicious small plates to browse on the terrace tables outside the Uitsig heritage cottages,or inside by the fire. The vineyard, lawns and Constantiaberg mountain views are spectacular, but it’s the often-changing, flavourful, unpretentious (and affordable) small plates that draw a crowd.

Enhancing the experience is excellent service, two top-tier wine-pairing options, fantastic views of the Atlantic from the hillside above Camps Bay, and edgy-chic interiors.

Opened in August 2024, Coy is chef Ryan Cole’s second restaurant, with sparkling views over harbour, yacht basin and Table Mountain, moody chiaroscuro interiors and a relaxed take on fine dining. Head chefs Geoffrey Abrahams and Teenola Govender focus on sustainable, ethical and locally sourced ingredients that tell a story on the plate, following the coastline around the continent to explore African produce, age-old preparation techniques and forgotten ingredients.

“Coy has that rare mix of style and substance. It’s modern, clever and still manages to feel warm and welcoming. I love when a new spot makes you stop and think about what you’re eating. It’s a great place to unwind, especially when I’ve been stuck in routine and need a bit of food inspiration.”
Eric Bulpitt (Ernie Els)
Runner-up: Ongetem
It means untamed in Afrikaans, and Bertus Basson’s first foray into the innercity is anything but tame. Just off Kloof Street in the shiny new Canopy by Hilton Cape Town Longkloof hotel, it opened in May 2025, and with Bertus at the helm, it’s not your stock-standard hotel restaurant (the tagline is butcher, baker, cocktail maker). There’s a heap of South African nostalgia in a superb collection of small plates, wood-fired flatbreads and punchy mains, everything made in-house or sourced locally, as well as top-notch cocktails and cool beats.

But at The Foodbarn, you’re not here for fancy dining; Franck’s “been there, done that”. His roots in southern France inform his hearty, earthy style in ‘bistronomy’ lunches and tapas dinners served with bonhomie in a relaxed, family- (and even dog-) friendly setting.

Rooted in the flavours of Cyprus and Greece, it offers seasonal, contemporary interpretations of traditional dishes – each vibrant, soulful and deeply satisfying. Runner-up (tied): He Sheng
Authentic with a capital A, He Sheng prides itself on lip-smacking food that has Sea Point locals, Chinese patrons and some of Cape Town’s top chefs coming back for more. The owners (a young couple who worked with Ma and then took over in 2023) have kept the same no-frills philosophy of cheap-and-cheerful decor and honest-to-goodness food, and pretty much the same menu of adventurous dishes that you won’t find elsewhere in the city.

BEST OVERALL RESTAURANTS: TOP 5
Winner: La Colombe
The acclaimed flagship of Scot Kirton’s gastronomic empire serves up inventive, immaculately styled and utterly delicious plates amid a tranquil forest setting. Beyond the ambience of the space and intricacy of the menu, there’s a playful sense of whimsy under executive chef James Gaag’s guidance – which makes it an event rather than a meal. From the charming ‘dove’s nest’ starter and tuna La Colombe (served in individual tins) to the final sweet bite, the feast unfolds with a sense of theatre that’s truly unforgettable.

“I went recently and honestly, it was flawless – like, annoyingly perfect. The service? Impeccable. Things just happen without you even noticing. One minute you’re admiring the forest through the windows, next thing you know your napkin’s magically on your lap, your glass is full of bubbles, and there’s some dreamy amuse-bouche on the table that you absolutely didn’t order (but are very happy to eat). The food? Always on point – creative without being fussy, and each plate somehow better than the last. It’s the kind of place where you feel completely spoiled without anyone ever making a fuss. Basically, they’ve nailed that effortless theatre of fine dining… and I’ll be back as soon as I can justify a “research trip”.
