Actress and Author Bonnie Mbuli On Her Favourite Cape Town Haunts

When she’s not gracing the big screen, the 40-year-old actress and mother reveals how she spends her downtime – from burger joints to dancing hotspots.

I was born and raised in Pimville, Soweto, an area affectionately known as PimCity.

If I could live anywhere in the world, I’d live in the UK – it’s my favourite place.

My dream lunch date would be with [American actress] Regina King.

I moved to Cape Town seven years ago. It has been an incredible adventure.

The thing I love most about the city is that I don’t have to drive much – it’s so walker-friendly. Cape Town is also breathtakingly beautiful!

My happiest spot in the city is the Sea Point promenade. I love taking early-morning or late-afternoon Sunday walks here – it calms and centres me. I feel like all my anxiety or worries get tossed into the sea.

The coolest neighbourhood in Cape Town is Bo-Kaap. It’s so diverse, always lively, and has so much heritage and culture.

My dream day in Cape Town would go like this: I’d start my day with a yoga class at MyUtopia, then head to the Oranjezicht Market and meet friends for breakfast where I would buy some bread, cheese and vegetables (they also make the best mayo!). I’d then go home for an afternoon nap, after which I’d go to FYN for dinner and then some dancing at Souk.

My favourite beach is Bakoven.

My favourite bar is Tjing Tjing Rooftop Bar.

My favourite burger is the cheeseburger at Clarke’s.

We are so spoilt for choice with restaurants in Cape Town. I have favourite dishes all over the peninsula: the mussels at Mano’s, pasta at Il Leone, coffee at Deluxe.

A hike up Lion’s Head always does me good.

My favourite weekend getaway is Cedarpeak in the Cederberg.

For a good party, I go to Souk.

Busy Bonnie always has her fingers in several pies simultaneously. In addition to raising her two sons, she’s currently starring in the highly anticipated BBC One series, Noughts and Crosses, a TV adaption of the acclaimed novels by Malorie Blackman; and a new series Vagrant Queen. Bonnie’s makeup collaboration with UK Beauty brand Yardley London, BonnieXYardley, is available in stores now.
