A sublime country escape in the Winelands.

When it comes to an authentic Winelands experience, Boschendal ticks all the boxes. The cluster of 18 cottages in a remote corner of the farm offers the best of both worlds: you’re immersed in fynbos gardens and magnificent mountain views, away from the bustle of the working farm, but the central Werf, with all its visitor attractions, is a short drive (3.5km) away. The farm’s hiking paths and biking trails are close enough for instant access to nature’s playground.

The newly refurbished two-bedroom cottages are light and bright, with furniture spruced up by the farm’s woodworking team (repair-and-restore being part of the sustainable ethos of Boschendal). The cottages have an open-plan living area with a fully equipped kitchen, dining table and lounge with a fireplace – all leading out onto a picturesque patio.

Boschendal Accommodation: Retreat Cottages Revamped Natural Swimming Pool

A star feature of the Retreat is the natural swimming pool. The water is filtered by the aquatic flora, and you might even spot the occasional tadpole. At day’s end, Retreat guests gather in the boma to enjoy the incredible sunset and spend time around the firepit. As the most family-friendly accommodation choice at Boschendal, it’s sure to spark many happy memories and new connections.

While you’re there

Boschendal Accommodation: The Werf and Garden Exterior

Foodies will be in their element with the Werf Restaurant and Deli serving farm-to-fork plates of deliciousness, while the Werf Bar is ideal for sundowner cocktails. The lazy Sunday sharing-plate lunches and Winemaker’s Dinners on Thursdays are highlights. There are also wonderfully relaxed picnics to enjoy, and the summertime Friday Night Market is a popular favourite.

Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the trails through orchards and mountain fynbos: on foot, by bike or on horseback (with pony rides for the little ones). A guided walking tour of the farm offers insights into how it all works – and the chance to do a little produce-harvesting of your own. The Tree House and Outdoor Experience is an exceptional one-stop adventure zone for children aged five to 14 years.

The 1685 Manor House is home to the Norval Art Gallery, and there are special wine tastings (with chocolate, cheese, charcuterie or oysters and cap classique) at the Cellar Door and Werf. For a spot of retail therapy, the Farm Shop is filled with beautifully curated merchandise inspired by the farm.
