Stellenbosch Wine Tasting
Stellenbosch Wine Tasting

With more than 200 farms, the Stellenbosch Winelands can be a little daunting. How do you know where to go for the best wine-tasting experience: where the space, the views, the people and the wines come together to create perfection? If you had a year at your disposal, sure, you could visit them all. But with limited time, you need to be selective.

We asked a bunch of local sommeliers and wine-bar owners, whose passion and career are all about wine, to handpick 21 of their best wine-tasting experiences on the Stellenbosch Wine Routes. Their recommendations are below.

Capensis Wines

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Capensis

Capensis, meaning “from the Cape”, was launched in 2013 by Barbara Banke of California-based Jackson Family Wines and Cape Town-born winemaker Graham Weerts. Home to the highest vineyards in Stellenbosch, the vines here reach 620 metres above sea level and offer views across the beautiful Banhoek valley. The beautifully appointed Kliphuis tasting room sits quietly in the mountains, its stone-and-glass design opening onto long, uninterrupted views of the landscape. You’ll be treated to older vintages and special bottlings by the very knowledgeable and welcoming hosts. Says Sam Ross, the sommelier at Salsify: “The focus here is on exploring different expressions of Cape chardonnay, some structured and powerful, others tighter, more mineral and finely textured, all sourced from top elevated and coastal sites. They recently introduced their first cabernet sauvignon, a polished red that adds another layer to the lineup.”

Waterford Estate

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Waterford

The picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley is home to this scenic estate, whose understated architecture – of terracotta and bricks – was designed by architect Alex Walker in conjunction with winemaker Kevin Arnold. A fountain at the entrance sets the scene for an unforgettable day in the country. Offering several unique tasting experiences, the tasting room has something for everyone – whether you’re a serious oenophile or a novice. Says Eben Mupupa, the sommelier at Coy: “Waterford is one of those estates where everything comes together beautifully, the setting, the wines, the people and the experiences. Their wine-and-chocolate pairing is particularly memorable, and it is the kind of relaxed experience where you can take your time and enjoy the estate rather than simply rushing through a tasting.”

Rust en Vrede

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Rust En Vrede

With its national monument Cape Dutch buildings dating back to the 1700s, surrounded by manicured gardens dotted with rose bushes and towering oaks, with views over the vineyards, Rust en Vrede is an idyllic setting. With a fine focus on estate cabernet sauvignon and syrah its full-bodied wines are renowned for their ageing potential. The Tasting Room is in the cellar (for extra atmosphere, ask to sit in the underground cellar) or settle in on the leafy deck and combine your wine-tasting with the superbly simple Winemaker’s Lunch. “Rust en Vrede is a must for anyone who takes South African red wine seriously,” says Eben Mupupa of Coy. “The estate has an incredible sense of history, place and when you combine the wines with the restaurant experience, it becomes a destination rather than simply a tasting stop.” Joe Beziak, sommelier at Ellerman House, agrees, “It’s an estate I think of when I think of heritage. They produce some of Stellenbosch’s most recognisable red wines and it’s a great option for guests wanting to combine serious cabernet and syrah with a memorable lunch. It serves one of the best salmon dishes I’ve ever had!”

Secluded at the end of a long winding farm road, picturesque Jordan Wine Estate is rich with birdlife and glorious views. A dedicated wine-tasting pavilion and deck looking over the dam and valley is a gorgeous setting to soak up stories of the terroir, the vines and winemaking processes. Wayne Furness of Furny’s Fine Wines says: “It’s an authentic experience in a family-run winery that offers a large selection of consistently great wines.” And Tongai Charie of Upper Union adds: “A deeply educational and welcoming immersion among rolling hillside vineyards. Thelema

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Thelema

Snaking though copse after copse of trees above the Helshoogte Pass, the air gradually becoming thinner, flintier, mountain-tinged, you finally arrive at Thelema’s tasting room. Established in 1983 by South African wine legend, Gyles Webb, it was one of the pioneering estates in this valley, and its range of wines continues to go from strength to strength with son Thomas Webb now the driving force as general manager. Settle into the forested tasting room to taste both Thelema’s wines and those of Sutherland, the family’s Elgin property. “One of the most quality consistent, amazing cabernet sauvignon producers with an intimate setup against the backdrop of the Banhoek mountain,” says Luvo Ntezo, sommelier at One&Only Cape Town. Sam Ross of Salsify adds, “Winemaker Rudi Schultz produces classically styled reds with real consistency. The Rabelais is the flagship, deep, composed and built to age. The estate cabernet is lush and powerful, while the “mint” cabernet brings the cool, herbal lift Thelema is known for.”

Settle into the tasting room where the views over this special terroir are part of the experience. Says Coy’s Eben Mupupa: “It is the combination of that dramatic landscape and the precision of the wines that keeps me going back. Muratie Wine Estate

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Muratie

History buffs, walk this way! Almost as old as time itself, this Stellenbosch estate (founded in 1685) captures the very essence of the Cape’s history inside its every nook and cranny. Everything from the buildings to the artefacts and trees are relics of a bygone age, yet wonderfully at home in the present. Tastings take place in the cobwebbed Tasting Room (complete with old paintings and stained glass); the beautifully maintained, old-styled George Paul Canitz room (which honours the famous Stellenbosch painter who once owned the farm); or amid the cellar’s weathered-looking, old wine tanks. “Muratie has a personality that is difficult to replicate,” says Coy sommelier Eben Mupupa. “The old cellar, the history, the art and the character of the estate make you feel as though you are experiencing a piece of Stellenbosch history while enjoying very serious wines. It is also somewhere I would happily visit with my family because there is enough space and atmosphere to make it enjoyable beyond the tasting itself.”

Spier

Stellenbosch Wine Tasting Spier

It’s the archetypal Stellenbosch wine farm – think age-old trees, Cape Dutch buildings, vineyards and a river running through it – with a focus on ethical farming and creativity. Enjoy a wine-tasting (including organic wines) and pairings on the deck beside the dam or in the art-filled indoor tasting room. There’s even a “Garden Mixologist” tasting of cordials for kids. “Spier is one of the most family-friendly estates in the Cape, offering a complete, easygoing experience,” says Sam Ross of Salsify. “The tasting is relaxed and well run, with everything from approachable wines to the more serious 21 Gables and Frank K Smit ranges. Beyond the tasting room, Spier offers wide lawns, picnic areas, walking paths, a riverside section, craft studios, an hourly vineyard Segway tour, and the casual Bubbles & Braai pop-up when the weather is good. As a parent with a toddler, it’s one of the simplest places to enjoy quality wine without stress. Kids have the Elemental play garden to explore, and adults still get a full, high-quality tasting.”
