For a casual meal Chefs Warehouse & Canteen on Bree Street. It is consistently great, the service is attentive and friendly, but not fussy, the winelist is good. And the atmosphere is buzzy.
For a special occasion Chefs Warehouse again – this time at Beau Constantia. The views are spectacular, the atmosphere is elegant yet unpretentious, and Ivor Jones’ food never disappoints. Perfect for a special occasion, as it has that certain wow factor.
For a guilty pleasure When I am feeling particularly slothful, my favourite thing to do is to binge-watch series in bed with an Indian takeout from Jewel of India. We order the same thing every time; myself a lamb curry, samoosas and naan bread, and my wife orders their vegetarian potato curry.
For a Winelands experience One of my favourites would have to be George Jardine’s Jordan Restaurant. The setting is idyllic and the food is a treat. Coupled with flawless service, and you can’t go wrong!
For authentic cuisine I really enjoy Bao Down – their bao is light, bouncy and perfect, and their fillings are delicious; I haven’t had anything that comes close to it in Cape Town.
I also love Shio in Greenpoint.
Best new restaurant I’ve really been enjoying The Commissary lately, especially as they’re open on a Monday, which is my night off. The vibe is New York cool yet casual, the service on-the-ball, and the tasty snacky plate options keep the meal varied and fun. You have to try their wedge salad!
Best “oldie but goodie” La Mouette. One of Cape Town’s grandest and most long-standing establishments, and if you visit once, you’ll see why. The food is always sublime and the service is perfect; we have spent countless date nights and anniversaries there, and it has never once disappointed.
The best restaurant overall Can I say my own, Grub & Vine?
